Our super fun small group has its annual Halloween party on Friday night.
There is always a theme. Last year it was "people in power" This year was " famous couples"
The theme was know before hand, but what people's costume would be was a surprise.
It was super fun to show up and see the costumes.
So we went with one of my favorite pairings - ketchup and mustard. Those that know me well know I love ketchup. It is the reason french fries were invented.
I bought these hats at a garage sale over a year ago. I bought them at the time just because I knew Kevin liked fun hats. I thought they were cones at first, and then we realized they may have been the top of crayons?
I think they work well as bottle tops.
I sewed the bottom bottle part. I was so happy how well the colors of the hat and suits matched. As always for me, any sewing project takes double the time I think it is going to.
Kade was just icing on the cake. It was very fun to have the three of us coordinate.
Kade's costume was actually a costume for a dog. We normally put the hotdog on his back, so it was super cute when he crawled around.
Here is our whole group.
The mad hatter and Alice
Ham and Garciaparra
Michael and Farah (members of our group)
The cute kiddos compare costumes.
Yum yum. Getting ready for dinner.
The whole family enjoying our fall themed meal.
Our elegant place cards.
We had a great evening. We played some halloween themed games. Thanks to our hosts, Michael and Farah.
On Halloween itself we went to dinner with friends and went to a festival at a church.
The adults decided to dress a little more comfortable. Our ketchup and mustard costumes were awesome, but not super comfy.
Kade was darth vader.
As you will notice Kade did not care for the hat part of his costume. It was hard to keep it one even for a quick photo.
The whole family. Mom the scientist, Dad the military man, and Kade as Darth.
Jon with the owl cuttie.
We went to dinner before the festival. We went with the Grindy's and Coulters. Nick was dressed as Yoda. It was not planned to have the two kiddos dress in the Star Wars theme.
I think this is the best photo I have of the kiddos.
I like this photo because I think it sums up Nick's feelings about taking photos. Crazy boys were not interested in taking pictures - don't they realize how cool their costumes are?
We tired to put on the hat one more time.... Kade was done with photos and hats.
We gave him a break from photos and went to the play area.
Nick and his jedi mom. The whole Grindy family had awesome costumes.
Don't you just love candid shots? I did not get many good shots of the Rob jedi and wanted to include him.
Some how we got out of the festival without any candy, but we left our house early enough, and got home late enough so we did not pass out any of our own candy - so it all evened out.
We went camping this weekend. People from our church went with us.
We borrowed my parents super cool suburban. It is a huge, lumbering contraption. It was so nice to have the extra space.
Here is Kevin driving the beast.
Kade sleeping on the way to the campsite.
I could not be left out of the "getting there" shot, so I took a self portrait :)
We were so excited about seeing friends, getting settled into the campsite, etc, that we did not take any photos the day we arrived.
Here Kevin and Kade are enjoying some oatmeal breakfast on Sat morning.
More breakfast shots. Kade got to pig out (just like the adults - what fun is camping without yummy food?)
So Kade tried his first Costco muffin and fruit loops on our trip. He liked them both :) He gave us the more sign lots.
Everyone that went on our trip had at least one kiddo. Esspecially since we have a crawler, we wanted a non fire pit, not super dirty place for Kade to crawl, so we brought this monster kiddie corral.
Even the bigger kids had fun in it. Kade only likes if it someone else is there with him.
The last day, when we are packing up, we put the corral in the subruban and Kade roamed free for about 20 min at most. Those extremely dirty 20 min, where he was super facinated with the fire pit, convinced me it was worth it to lug all the corral and blankets camping.
After our yummy breakfast we took a walk.
We walked to the general store, and the boat launch area. The lake was beautiful!
My favorite new family photo
After exploring the campground, and the water, we went to the playground.
Here is Kevin's crazy camping face. Doesn't he look excited about the playground ?
Kade has really been liking slides. He is getting really good at our slide at home.
WEEEeeeeee Big twisty slide with Dad.
He loves going us steps. Not so good at getting down, but the up part is fun.
Walking around with Mom.
Back at the campsite, more play time.
Kade and Nick did a pretty good job of playing together.
Look at this - one very tired boy at lunch. All this camping excitement can really wear you out.
Kade's buddy Josiah was tickling him.
This was a 3 boy dog pile. It was really fun to see Kade interacting with all of the other kids. He seems like a very social kid. He is excited by other "little people"
Now we just need to teach him that you do not show excitment by touching people eyes, or flailing your arms in people's faces
It's starting to get chilly as we make dinner, so out come the cute beanies.
Kade excited after dinner. We had burgers and hot dogs one night, and tri tip the other night. All very yummy in opinion.
Happy kiddo.
Kade keeps doing better and better at feeding himself
The family around the fire pit. Where is my silly hat???
Kade enjoying his "smores"
He just got a graham cracker. Maybe next time he will get the delux deal.
Cleaning out the empty tent and ready to head home.
We had a great weekend. The weather was perfect. The campsite was beautiful since it had rained recently it was green all around. The sites were not very full, so was had a huge area all to ourselves. Great company, good food, a mostly happy baby. Fun trip.
The weather has been great recently - so we went to the beach with some friends.
Kade loved the water. It was very cold, but he still wanted to go in
We started out in diapers since we were not too sure how this cold waves thing would work, but he loved it, so we switched to real swim trunks.
Kade also loved all the rocks. Lots of colors and shapes to play with.
Last week I got to baby sit our friends kid, Nick.
His parents were both busy for about a hour and a half, so we had fun, mostly.
Here Kade is happy to see a friend. hurray
Here Nick is just realizing his Dad is gone. Brief sadness is coming.
So as to not dwell about the lack of familar parent faces, we went on a walk. I bought this double stroller at a garage sale a few weeks back, and it was a great chance to try it out.
I loved the stroller, and the kiddos loved the walk - well at least the first 3/4 of it.
Time for a change a scenery again - Back at home
This was the closest they really got to playing together. They were both interested in the blocks.
I love the similar expressions :) Open mouth and wide eyed.
It is getting harder and harder to get a good photo of Kade. I used to get lots of photos, but recently nothing has been great.
I think it is tricky for a few reasons
1. Kade does not like to look at the camera - he is not curious about it anymore. He used to stare at it trying to figure it out, but the camera is old news now.
Tricky reason #2 Kade is more active. If he is smiling, then he is generally moving. Moving alot = blurry photos. I hate is that some of the more fun shots recently have been blurry bad.
I think he is trying to smile for the camera here.
So now I either have boring photos, while he is still for a split moment, or I have blurry photos where he is cute, moving and smiling.
We had to go to LA area for a Kade Dr visit. It would have been a super long and hard day to drive, see the Dr and drive home. So we enjoyed a stay in Kevin's parent's time share in Anaheim. We waited until last min to book a room, since any rooms still vacant we can get for a good deal. Well the only one left was the 2 bedroom presidential (well i think there was a three bedroom - but you have to draw the line somewhere :)
The room was amazing. It was close to the size of our house. We felt like very important people.
Here Kevin and Kade are relaxing after our delicious Acapulcos dinner.
Our great view of California Adventure from 14 floors. I watched a bit of the cool Disney fireworks from the balcony.
It was a bummer to stare at Disneyland and not go :( But again, the hotel was super fantastic.
Did not get any photos that really did the time share justice. This was the living room area. Very nice furniture, spacious, etc.
Watching cable (We just get 2 or 3 channels at home, so it added to the luxury of the time share)
There was this living room, an office area, a gorgeous kitchen (granite, stainless steel, big, etc), a bathroom for Kade, Kade room, our bedroom, our bathroom with a big spa tub, a shower with two shower heads.
One dissadvantage of too much fancy was the fan. They were high tech with remotes and some sort of programing. Well, we accidently, or someone before us, set the fan and light on the fan to come on at 1am. That was a bummer and rude awakening.
According to me, what hotel stay would be complete without some good pool time. Thankfully Kade likes the pool about as much as him mom. :)
Fun pool sequence with his dad
Huge smile on Kade's face after the water launch.
Round two. Look at the excitement, and anticipation.
Lots of laughs.
Up at the very top of this photo you can barely see the circle of our huge balcony.
Part of out of town fun is going to great restaurants. Yummy Cheesecake factory.
Kade trying to "help" hold the to go bag with a dirty face.
So our reason for being in the area was a Dr appointment for Kade at Children Hospital LA with a cranio facial specialist Dr.
We went last year in Sept and he wanted to see us again this year, and see how Kade looked with teeth.
We go to this Dr since the different sides of Kade's jaw and face are not quite growing/developing at the same rate and it is not really something a regular pediatrician handles. the Dr today said Kade's case is super minor. No real change since last year. That was expected. The good news is that it is not worse.
He thinks if Kade does need some surgery it will be several years down the road, or he will need some major braces, or best case, he will not need any correction.
So we are just being watched for right now. Next year it will be a bigger deal. We will meet with the whole cranio facial team (this was just a single Dr). The group of Doctors will develop a treatment plan for Kade. Our appointment should be about 4 hours of seeing different doctors. Yeah, we are already not excited about that one.
On a side note, Kade is doing better feeding himself. He ate two pieces of bread at the Cheesecake factory :) yeah.
Overall a great visit. We enjoyed fun restaurants, a great place to stay, good weather, little trafffic, a happy cute boy, a wonderful pool, and generally good news from the Dr.
Here is the front of our house after the paid labor portion was finished. We still had to put our fence and gate back up.
Notice the left of our house - it has this weird angled "wing" .
Here is Kevin putting up the last of the new fence. Our neighbor helped too. Most of the old fence between our houses was very low so our neighbor could see a side view of the hills. We did not like it that low - low enough for a curious boy to climb over one day. We compromised and made most of it high, and at the very end we tapered it down to medium high.
So the long fence between our houses is up - but we still don't have a gate in the front. We decided, as long as we are building a new gate, we may as well get rid of the weird angle wing thing.
My dad and Kevin were able to saw and hack away at it. It provides no structural support for the house. It was just a weird design choice, and I am so glad it is gone.
The real hard part was not the wing itself, but the cement that the wing sat on. Kevin had the very dirty and very hard job of chipping away at it.
It is hard to see but Kevin's hair is white from all the concrete dust - but he does look awesome in his protective eye glasses.
Here is how the house looks now. Wing removed.
We have been doing a big landscaping project. Here is a quick view of the side of our house, looking into the back yard. This fence is sitting on a crumbling retaining wall.
step one: take down the fence between us and our neighbor.
Here is a picture of why we started this project. The wall is slowly coming down.
The previous owners must have gotten tired of building a retaining wall, and just put up wood? The wood was rotten, and falling down.
So it was time to build a proper retaining wall.
Here is day 1 of the hard work. We hired out the hard stuff. Our front side yard was this sloping dead grass yard. It was not really usable space, and water just flowed onto the driveway due to the slope.
We took away the slope dirt, and made our whole side of the house the same flat level.
This is about two days later. The tractor took away all of the extra dirt from the slope, and we discovered these pipes. Yikes. Luckly we did not hurt anything, re-routed the pipes, and kept going with the project.
View from the newly exposed flat area in the front looking back.
In the back yard, looking to the street. This is where the falling down wall used to be.
The area to totally flat, a trench is dug, and the concrete truck is here to pout the foundation for the wall.
This whole area where the truck is sitting used to be wasted space - now our whole yard seems larger.
Blocks and grout ready to build a wall.
Starting the wall. Here you can better see the new side yard we created.
Between the houses.
Kade's room is right by the construction, but with one excepetion, he just slept through the noise.
Kade is enjoying the huge new sand box we created in the front. We plan on putting plants here, but we are not quite there yet.
So what have we been up to since Africa? Well life is marching on. Kevin started school :( boo hoo. Kade and I are keeping busy around the house. Somehow the days are just flying by. It is September!! Crazy.
Kade and I went with another mommy and kiddo friend to a berry picking day. It was fun and we got some super yummy berries. We picked strawberries and raspberries.
It was at a local farm. I have met the owner and he is a cool guy, so it is fun to support local agriculture.
We just ate the strawberries. We ate about half of the raspberries, and I made this very yummy sauce from the juice of the other half.
Kade sat in the stroller for about half of the trip, and then he was ready to investigate. He just liked to squish the berries between his fingers. No photos of the raspberries - I was too busy picking and making sure a little boy did not get a thorn in his finger.
I have been garage saling a lot recently. I enjoy the time out driving by myself, and I cannot believe what kind of deals I find. It is very exciting for the bargain hunter in you. I found a stroller that sells new for $300, and I got it for $3. Crazy!
Well this hat was not quite as much of a steal, but I thought it looked cute. Now Kade is ready for fall/winter camping.
It has also been hot hot hot. A few days in the 100's which is rare for us.
We have spent some days in the kiddie pool, playing in the hose, and the sprinklers. Kade continues to be my outdoor and water boy. It is just a bummer the grass gives him a little rash.
We met some friends at the new park near our house. When Kade can really walk around I am sure this will be a popular place for the family.
Oh the joy of the slide :)
Notice the shoes. Kade's feet are so fat we have a very hard time putting shoes on them - he normally just has socks on. These shoes are several sizes too large. He also drags his feet when he crawls, so in bare feet, he will crawl until the tops of his toes are bloody :( So I try to always have some sort of feet protection on him.
He had to trim our apple tree for a large landscape project we are working on. (More about that later.) I thought it would be a fun post - Kade among the apples, but he is getting worse and worse about looking at the camera.
These apples were very very tart. I tried to make applesauce with them, but it needed lots of sugar. I am not a fan of applepie.
Kade is becoming a big eater. He still does not like to put things in his mouth, and has problems with texture (he will throw up if he eats table food). So although he does not like to pick up table food and eat it, he does chow down on baby food.
Some of his favorites are black beans, bananas, apricots, Gerber squash, and mixed fruit.
Kevin's parents live in Mozambique. We could not miss the opportunity to visit Africa, and they had no complaints about getting some grandbaby time :)
Because we took so many photos, I have broken up the trip in several blogs. Keep scrolling down to get the full vacation.
For the last part of our trip we went to South Africa to visit Kruger park. It is a huge perserve for large animals. This is probably our favrote photo of the whole trip.
We saw the giraffes up really close, even closer than this photo. Kade was so excited to see them. Seeing the giraffes were probably the highlight of the whole trip. They were fun to see just for themselves, but it was even more fun seeing Kade super excited.
We saw giraffes several times in the park, but this was the closest. It was a group of about 5 and one baby. They were just hanging out by the road and eating. So cool and graceful.
These lumps are hippos. We saw lots of hippos. They were all far away. Some were lying down like this, some standing, some in the water, etc.
The scenery in the park was very pretty. Even when we drove and did not see any animals it was very beautiful.
The whole park is huge. You have to stay in your car other than designated rest stops. So you drive around and try and spot wildlife. Kevin thought it was like Where's Waldo. You know what it looks like, you are just trying to spot it.
Over the course of the day we saw giraffes, hippos, elephants, kudu, gazells, impalas, tons of birds, alligators, a huge lizard thing, wildabeast.
Here is our little safari man ready to go see some animals.
So we drove around, trying to find animals and took a few breaks to stretch our legs. We stopped at one of the rest stops, and Kade loved touching the animal furs they had for sale. Or maybe he was just happy to be out of the car?
We drove around until the late afternoon, and this was the sky as we left the park. Very pretty.
We spent two nights at a beautiful bed and breakfast just outside the park. The lodge was beautiful, our room was great, it was very private. It was a wonderful end to our trip, a real relaxing vacation spot.
The lodge was in a smaller private reserve. It too had quite a lot of animals. It was a great counter to the Kruger park. Kruger had the larger animals, but they were far away. Here they came right up to you.
Kade enjoying the beautiful lodge common area.
Kade up close with the hipppo :)
Hippos are supposed to be very mean, so this is as close was we want Kade. :)
This is the chef that cooked our dinner and breakfast at the lodge. Good food.
enjoying our dinner
This was a yummy lunch. We had wonderful hamburgers. Kevin's came with monkey gland sauce. Sounded gross, but it was a type of BBQ sauce, and was very delish - no monkeys were harmed.
At an animal look out spot near our lodge. We did not see a lot at this spot, but again, still pretty scenery.
Thanks! I did not notice we were on that page until you mentioned it. How fun. read more
on Halloween weekend
